When you don’t have access to the Shared Folders, Drives, probably the responsible factor is the error 0x80004005. Sometimes,  Windows Updates fail to install and as a result, you will be notified with this error. 

The Windows notification issue is another prime reason for the occurrence of this error. Moreover, you will not be able to open compressed files and folders.

Often corrupted system files trigger up the error. No matter whatever the reason is, you have to resolve it so that it might not lead to severe issues.

How to Fix Error Code 0x80004005?

Here are some of the effective ways that you can implement on your own to fix error 0x80004005: Unspecified error

Method 1: Make sure to Repair Corrupt System Files 

You might find various corrupted system files in your system. With the help of the SFC tool, DISM tool, and many others, you can easily fix them. Here are the procedures to follow: 

Use the SFC Tool 

This tool helps your PC to scan properly and also helps to repair corrupted files. 

  1. To open the Win + X menu, press the Windows Key and R at the same time on the keyboard. 
  2. Then, make sure to select the Command Prompt as Admin. 
  3. After opening the Command Prompt, type SFC or scannow and then hit the Enter button. 
  4. During the time of the repairing process, you should not interrupt or do not close the Command Prompt. 

Use the DISM Tool 

Sometimes, you might be unable to run the SFC tool. Then, you can run the DISM tool on your computer to repair those corrupted files. Hence,

  1. The Command Prompt needs to open as the administrator. 
  2. Now, type DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and then hit the Enter button. 
  3. The repairing process might take a long period of time and at that time, you should not interrupt the process. 
  4. When the DISM tool completes repairing the corrupted files, restart your computer to check whether the files still exist or not. 

Solution 2: Fix the Registry Key 

Because of the registry key, the Error 0x80004005: unspecified error on a VirtualBox might pop up. To fix,

  1. Hold the Windows key and R at the same time on the keyboard. 
  2. After entering the “Regedit” click on the OK. 
  3. Make sure to enter the following command. 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

“C:\Program Files\Orcale\VirtualBox\virtualBox.exe”= “DISABLEUSERCALLBACKEXCEPTION”. 

If you find these keys exist, then make sure to delete it. Sometimes deleting the keys might not fix this issue and then disable the antivirus that you use. 

If still the error exists then, you need to uninstall the antivirus. After testing it, just reinstall it and check whether the issue still persists or not. 

Solution 3: Use Regedit 

When you try to access a shared drive or folder, the error might interrupt. To fix this error, create a LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy Value with the help of Regedit. 

  1. Press and hold the Windows key and R at the same time on the keyboard. 
  2. After that, enter Regedit and then click on the OK. 

If you are using a 32-bit system, then create a new DWORD value and for a 64-bit system, make a QWORD. 

For both cases, set the value to 1 and then click on the OK. In most of the cases this value gets created before setting a data value. You should just double-click and then modify the value from 0 to 1. 

If you still notice that the problem persists then, perform these steps. 

  1. Press and hold the Windows key and R at the same time on the keyboard. 
  2. Now, locate the Device Manager and for that enter hdwwiz.cpl. 
  3. Navigate to the Network Adapters to click on the View. 
  4. Then, click on the View Hidden Devices option and then the Network Adapters need to expand. 
  5. Sometimes, you might find the Microsoft 6to4 Adapters, then right-click and select the “Remove Deice” to delete them. 
  6. Finally, restart your PC and check if the issue persists or not. 

Solution 4: Make Sure Hardware Pass Via Allowed 

When you try to set up a VirtualBox on Ubuntu, the error 0x80004005 comes up on the screen. Sometimes, you might want to allocate more than 3GB of RAM to the VM. 

Then, you need to check whether the host is a 64-bit system or not. Therefore, ensure that the hardware passes through the allowed. 

Solution 5: For Virtual Machine Change Adapter Settings 

  1. After opening the Network Center, ensure that the adapter settings are changed. 
  2. After right-clicking on the Virtualbox host-only adapter, make sure to select the Properties option. 
  3. Thereafter, enable the “Virtualbox NDIS6 Bridget Networking Driver ” and then you will notice that VirtualBox starts to fine now. 
  4. If not, then make sure that Virtualbox NDIS6 Bridget Networking Driver is not disabled for every network adapter. 
  5. After unchecking the NDIS6, check whether the problem still persists or not.  

Solution 6: Uninstall Microsoft 6to4 

You might not see the Microsoft 6to4 devices as these are the hidden devices. To fix this issue, you need to uninstall the Microsoft 6to4 devices. To delete these devices, go through the steps mentioned hereunder. 

  1. Holding the Windows key, you need to press the R key. 
  2. Thereafter, enter devmgmt.msc and then hit the Enter button. 
  3. Navigate to the View option to click on the “Show Hidden Devices” option. 
  4. Now, you should double-click on the Network Adapters. 
  5. Thereafter, right-click on the Microsoft 6to4 device and then click on the Uninstall button. Also, ensure that you repeat these steps for all the Microsoft 6to4 devices. 

In the end, restart your PC and then check whether the problem is fixed or not. 

Solution 7: Try a Different Extracting Utility 

Sometimes, you might encounter this error at the time of opening a .zip file or a .rar file. Now, to fix this error, you can try a different extracting utility. 

First, check whether the file is password protected or not as the extractor utility is unable to handle the password-protected files. 

To do this, you need to download an another utility like 72ip. Then, check whether you are prompted to provide a password at the time of opening these archives. 

There is another method to fix the Error 0x80004005 while extracting files. 

Disable the Real-Time Protection of Your AV 

If Real-Time protection is enabled, then make sure to disable them. Because of the overprotective 3rd party security suite, you might encounter the error 0x80004005. It might be possible that you are using a third-party antivirus suite and that blocks the extraction of the zipped files. 

Instead of the default security suite, you can disable the real-time protection temporarily. You can even shield the third party AV and then check whether the issue persists or not. 

In order to avoid the conflict between two third-party suits, you can consider using a built-in security solution.
